The Crimson Desert DLC Charting the Unknown is the paid expansion released on October 29, 2026. It adds ocean exploration, ships, expanded housing, stronghold businesses, deeper relationships and new adventures for Kliff, Oongka and Damiane. It is separate from Crimson Desert Enhanced, the free base-game upgrade for existing owners.

You do not need to finish the entire main story to work toward every expansion system. Ocean progression and housing connect to Howling Hill and Greymane camp development. The three new character stories and Garden of Trials require Journey's End. That split is the most useful way to decide what the expansion adds to your current save.

Separate the expansion from other add-ons

Charting the Unknown is not the older Deluxe Pack or a soundtrack purchase. Check the full product name when reviewing what you own. A Deluxe Edition entitlement or an Enhanced base-game title does not, by itself, identify the October expansion as installed.

Enhanced updates the underlying adventure with story refinements, additional voice-over support and earlier post-launch additions. Charting the Unknown adds a distinct set of exploration and life systems. Installing the latest base-game update remains important, but the update and the paid expansion answer different questions: which build is running and which content your account can access.

If you are returning after several months away, inspect both before loading into a new activity. An updated title screen can show the current game branding while the expansion still needs its own entitlement or installation check. Use the expansion's exact name rather than assuming every item labeled DLC provides the same content.

Choose between earlier systems and post-game content

Enter Garden of TrialsComplete Journey's End and travel near Axiom Archive Abyss.
Receive Drakesfall CastleComplete Journey's End and liberate its stronghold.

This is not one continuous checklist that must be cleared before the expansion works. You can pursue a camp-centered route while the final main-story quest is still ahead of you. Conversely, finishing the campaign does not automatically teach every furnishing recipe, staff every business or prepare a ship.

Choose a first activity that matches your save. If the camp is already established, inspect the relevant faction quests and new systems there. If you want the narrative continuation for the three protagonists, the clear milestone is Journey's End. This prevents a missing post-game quest from looking like proof that the whole expansion is inaccessible.

Explore the ocean above and below the surface

Ships support travel between the expansions ocean locations.

Ships make the expansion's maritime exploration and trading possible. You can obtain a vessel through a ship-construction dispatch mission or purchase one from a fleetmaster. Fleetmasters in Demeniss and Delesyia sell parts for customization, so acquiring a hull and choosing how to equip it are separate decisions.

The ocean also contains new islands, pioneering missions and treasure maps. Sailing to a location is not the same as completing the mission associated with it. Read the island's active tasks when you arrive, particularly if your aim is to develop the location rather than simply visit it.

Underwater exploration uses a breath gauge. Refining a diving suit increases maximum breath capacity, and certain foods temporarily restore breath. That gives you a preparation choice before attempting a longer submerged route: extend your available time and plan how to return, rather than assuming every underwater discovery can be reached in one uninterrupted swim.

Aquatic creatures add another collection route. Their requirements depend on the creature: some can be subdued, while others are fed to raise Trust before registration. Approach the creature's own interaction as the guide to the next step. The expansion does not make every sea animal obtainable through the same taming action.

Build a home and claim supported castles

The expanded housing system gives you control over structural elements such as walls and windows. After the Howling Hill camp and Luke's Request requirements are satisfied, enter Home Decoration, choose Layout, then Free Construction. This is more substantial than placing another purchased chair in an existing room.

The expansion also adds 17 residences built through dispatch missions. A residence can be designated for your spouse, connecting the building and relationship systems. Choosing where a spouse lives is a different action from learning a furnishing blueprint or arranging the interior of your current home.

Two decoratable castles have distinct progression conditions. Drakesfall Castle connects to Journey's End and liberation of its stronghold. Flame Knight's Castle connects to Damiane's Politician quest and liberation of that location. Treat them as separate property routes; obtaining one does not prove that the other's character quest has been completed.

A castle can also involve reconstruction before furnishing. If you want a building project immediately, compare that longer commitment with the home construction options already available on your save. The expansion offers different scales of ownership, from a residence to a fortress, without requiring you to pursue every property in the same order.

Turn liberated strongholds into working businesses

The map's Facilities tab exposes management information for eligible strongholds. You can operate restaurants, sawmills, smithies and tailor's shops. Each business requires its own staff, goods and supporting equipment rather than becoming productive merely because its region has been liberated.

Timberham Sawmill provides an introduction to that management loop. You lease a site, assign comrades to suitable roles, choose products, place their required installations and open the shop. Popularity progression then supplies further objectives and rewards. The process gives camp resources a continuing use beyond a single quest payment.

Facilities continue operating while you are elsewhere, but that does not guarantee a particular income. Costs include wages and upkeep, and your products still need a functioning production and delivery chain. Before leaving for a long voyage, check that the business can fulfill the goods it lists instead of assuming a paid lease means it is running successfully.

Special visitors can bring bonuses to a managed facility. Those encounters are part of the operating business, not a substitute for its basic preparation. If staff cannot produce an order, improve the required equipment and role assignments before expanding the operation just to attract more customers.

Develop relationships beyond ordinary Trust

Charting the Unknown adds a further relationship level accessed through Interact > Flirt. Gift and Chat interactions after flirting build that additional Trust, with each interaction type increasing it once per day. At 100 on that relationship level, you can propose, subject to any extra requirements attached to the NPC.

Ordinary NPC Trust and this additional relationship progress should be read separately. A familiar merchant with a high standard Trust value is not automatically a completed romance. Check the available interaction and the relationship state rather than treating an old meter as a marriage entitlement.

Choose the playable hero you intend to use before developing the relationship. Flirting as one of Kliff, Oongka or Damiane decreases that NPC's Trust toward the other heroes. The relationship system therefore involves a character-specific choice, not a single romance progress bar shared by all three protagonists.

After marriage, your spouse appears on the map and minimap, can travel with you and may give gifts. You can designate a residence and change a spouse's appearance at barber shops. Camp festivals offer another way to spend time with sufficiently trusted visitors, and some visitors can become Honorary Greymanes available for dispatch duties.

Enter the post-game combat and story routes

Journey's End unlocks one new individual quest for each of the three playable characters through the Journal. If your main goal is more character narrative, check those entries after the main-story milestone rather than looking for one shared introduction that replaces all three.

Garden of Trials is a separate combat route near Axiom Archive Abyss. It contains 10 challenge groups and can use a chosen order of up to three protagonists. When one falls, the next continues. This is sequential single-player character use, not online co-op.

Food cannot be used for recovery in those challenges. Completing a group enhances an existing skill, making the activity a progression target as well as a combat test. Prepare around its specific restriction rather than assuming your normal supply of healing food will function inside.

Check save compatibility before switching setups

A save created while the DLC is installed cannot be loaded or used for cross-save in a game version without the DLC. This matters when you move between different platforms or installations. Confirm that the destination setup can access Charting the Unknown before expecting it to continue an expansion-enabled save.

Keep that compatibility check alongside your first activity choice. Establish whether the expansion is installed, identify which progression gate applies, and use the relevant Journal, camp or map interface. That gives you a concrete first target without turning every housing, maritime and post-game system into something you must complete at once.
