Damiane becomes playable through the Howling Hill camp introduction in Chapter 3, during First Step to Rebuilding. She is an additional protagonist with a distinct combat kit, including rapier, greatsword, shield and firearms. Unlocking her gives you another way to explore and fight; it does not turn the main adventure into co-op or make every Kliff-specific objective interchangeable.
Charting the Unknown also gives Damiane a new individual story after Journey's End, accessed through the Journal. That later quest route is separate from first recruiting her at the camp. Use the initial Chapter 3 introduction if she is not yet playable, and the post-game Journal route if your goal is her expansion narrative.
Unlock her through the Howling Hill introduction

Her initial introduction belongs to the Howling Hill progression.
Continue the main story into the Homestead progression and First Step to Rebuilding at Howling Hill. This is the stage where Kliff receives the camp location for gathering the Greymanes. Follow the escort and speak to Barden Middler in the camp to reach the introduction involving Damiane.
Complete the scene and inspect your playable-character options afterward. Meeting the camp's residents and unlocking the character are part of the same progression stage, so follow its current objective rather than searching towns for a separate mercenary contract.
If you have not yet reached this camp introduction, continue the main story to it. Visiting the location ahead of its active objective is not the same as completing the recruitment scene. The active save's story state determines whether Damiane has become available.
Her background is tied to the fallen House Spencer. After losing her family position, she trained under a swordmaster and later fled to Hernand while investigating trouble surrounding her mentor. That gives her own character story a different focus from Kliff's effort to reunite the Greymanes.
Learn her kit rather than copying Kliff's inputs
Damiane shares some familiar systems with Kliff, but her weapon actions have their own style. Open her skill tree while she is active and inspect the actions tied to the equipment you want to use. Similar skill names do not mean every animation, combo and follow-up behaves identically between protagonists.
Start with a small set of actions you can recognize: an ordinary attack, a defensive response, the weapon's heavier action and its movement option. Check the current input guide for your platform. This establishes what the selected weapon actually does before you add more elaborate combinations.
Her resource use also matters. Spirit and stamina support different parts of her actions, so inspect the cost of the move you are repeatedly using. If you spend the available resource on a long sequence, the next defensive or movement action may not be available when you expect it.
Do not treat a highly developed build video as a recruitment requirement. Damiane is playable before you collect every named late-game weapon and Abyss Gear in such a loadout. Learn her current equipment first, then decide which specific action or limitation you want an upgrade to address.
Compare her main weapon roles

Her heavier melee actions differ from the rapier approach.
| Equipment choice | Practical role to learn |
|---|---|
| Rapier | Fast melee actions, Sword Flurry and the Smiting Bolt side of her kit. |
| Greatsword or two-handed sword | Broader melee swings, launches and heavier follow-ups. |
| Pistol and other compatible firearms | Ranged attacks with aiming, shot and reload skills. |
| Shield | Defensive use, Shield Toss and related shield abilities. |
| Unarmed actions | Kicks, grapples and close-range techniques. |
These are different approaches, not a universal ranking. A greatsword-focused setup can feel very different from a rapier-and-firearm routine because the attack timing and range change. Try the relevant actions with the weapon equipped before spending resources to reproduce another player's preferred style.
Use the current equipment's details when comparing upgrades. A visual similarity between two weapons does not establish identical refinement results or Abyss Gear compatibility. Look at the actual stats, sockets and requirements of the item you own.
Start with rapier movement and Smiting Bolt
The rapier offers a fast melee style and access to Sword Flurry, which combines evasive movement with quick attacks. Learn how that action enters and leaves the enemy's reach rather than treating it as an ordinary stationary damage button.
Smiting Bolt provides another distinctive part of the kit. Inspect its skill upgrades and the action associated with your equipped weapon before deciding how to build around it. A ranged-looking effect and a close melee sequence can serve different moments in the same encounter.
If you are learning Damiane from Kliff, make the difference in timing your first priority. Use an opening you can recognize, complete a short sequence and check what movement or defense remains available afterward. Extending a combo only becomes useful when you can identify where the enemy's response fits.
Upgrade toward actions you actually intend to use. A rapier-centered setup does not automatically benefit from every recommendation made for a two-handed build, and an expensive named weapon is not a substitute for understanding the attack sequence it enables.
Use heavier weapons and the shield deliberately
Damiane's two-handed attacks include broader swings and attacks that can launch enemies. That gives them a different role from a rapid rapier sequence, particularly when several nearby enemies are within the sweep. The tradeoff is the commitment of the action and the opening needed to complete it.
Watch the point at which the attack finishes and a defensive response becomes possible. If the encounter keeps interrupting a long sequence, use a shorter action rather than assuming more damage on the weapon will solve the timing problem. This is especially relevant when enemies outside the immediate target are also attacking.
Shield Toss gives Damiane a shield-based attack that can bounce between targets before returning. The 2.04.00 update reduced its startup time, so older footage may not represent the current action's timing. Inspect and practice the version available on your installation.
Shield-related abilities such as Shield Sentinel use their own conditions, including Focus. Read the skill's current prompt and resource requirement before deciding that an absent response is a broken weapon. The shield kit contains more than one action, and selecting the intended one matters.
Add firearms without ignoring reload and movement
Damiane can use firearms alongside her melee options. Her skill list includes Charged Shot, Evasive Shot, Quick Reload and Focused Shot, giving ranged play several different ways to handle aiming, movement and shot preparation.
Begin by learning the gun's normal shot and reload, then inspect the specific skill you want to add. A charged action, an evasive shot and an ordinary aimed shot are not interchangeable. They can demand different openings and consume resources differently.
Build recommendations vary between pistols, muskets and shotguns, and those recommendations often assume particular refined gear. Do not turn a video's claim about staggering one boss into a guaranteed result against every enemy. Choose a firearm that fits the range and action you want to use, then evaluate its actual handling with your current equipment.
Keep a usable close-range response available when experimenting with ranged actions. Damiane's appeal is access to different parts of her kit, but changing weapons is useful only if you know which action you intend to perform after the switch. Learn that transition before stacking several unfamiliar gun skills into the same routine.
Start her individual expansion story
Complete Journey's End, then inspect the Journal for Damiane's new individual quest. Charting the Unknown adds one such route for each protagonist. Her story is not automatically completed by reaching the Chapter 3 recruitment scene, and the other heroes' new entries are separate narrative tracks.
The Damiane route is associated with From the Ashes and political conflict in Demeniss. Follow its current objective while playing the character it calls for. You do not need to use another protagonist's tavern or meeting location as a universal entry point for her story.
Her Politician quest also matters to Flame Knight's Castle. After that requirement and liberation of the stronghold, the castle becomes part of the expansion's property progression. Receiving access to that route is different from completing the reconstruction and furnishing the castle afterward.
For a spoiler-light approach, track the next Journal objective rather than watching the final confrontation or ending before beginning. The practical preparation is the ending milestone, the right character quest and the correct active objective; later dialogue outcomes are not needed to unlock her initial playable kit.
Use her in Garden of Trials and other activities
Garden of Trials becomes available after Journey's End and lets you choose an order of up to three characters from Kliff, Oongka and Damiane. If one falls, the next continues. This gives Damiane a defined role in a sequential lineup rather than making her an online party member.
Food recovery is unavailable inside the challenge. Review the actions and equipment you want her to use before entering, particularly if most of your time has been spent on another hero. Completing a challenge group enhances an existing skill, so the activity provides a separate progression reason to understand her kit.
For quests outside her own story, follow the character requirement shown by the active objective. If it calls for Kliff, use him for that step rather than treating the requirement as a failure to recruit Damiane correctly. The useful distinction is between having another playable combat character and replacing the central protagonist in every scripted task.
Once she is unlocked, choose a weapon style you can handle, inspect the skills it uses and pursue the appropriate Journal route when the main-story condition is met. Those checks give Damiane a concrete place in your playthrough without relying on an old complaint or an unsupported claim that one build makes her best at every activity.
