The Crimson Desert Lumen Sword is the one-handed glowing pink blade found in a hidden chest inside underwater ruins in Charting the Unknown. Locate the small island cluster northeast of the South Sea label, move north-northwest from the reference island, and descend into the offshore trench. Face south near the deeper rock wall, find the concealed cave opening around a corner, then follow the passage to the ruins and swim up to the upper-room chest.
This is a different weapon from the two-handed Lumen Longsword associated with Garden of Trials. You do not need to complete that challenge to open the underwater Lumen Sword chest. Your practical preparation is reaching the correct ocean location and carrying enough breathing capacity to navigate the descent and enclosed passage.
Choose the Correct Lumen Weapon Route
The shared Lumen name can send you toward the wrong objective. Before travelling, distinguish the one-handed Sword from the two-handed Longsword. The underwater route on this page is for the Sword, recognizable by its pink, lightsaber-like blade.
| Weapon | Type | Acquisition route |
|---|---|---|
| Lumen Sword | One-handed sword | Hidden chest in South Sea underwater ruins |
| Lumen Longsword | Two-handed weapon | Associated with Garden of Trials |
Garden of Trials itself becomes available after Journey’s End and contains ten challenge groups. Those post-game conditions explain why a Longsword guide can mention finishing the campaign. They are not a prerequisite chain for the chest described here.
Likewise, “free” in a weapon-video title can mean collected through gameplay rather than bought from a merchant. It does not mean Charting the Unknown is free or that the underwater area belongs to the unexpanded base game. Confirm that the expansion is installed before following its ocean route.
Prepare for a Deep Enclosed Swim
Equip breathing gear before setting out. The descent is followed by a cave passage and movement inside a ruin, so reaching the seabed is not the last use of your air. A character who barely reaches the opening still needs enough capacity to continue or return safely.
If you own the expansion’s preorder diving bonus, claim it through Others > Add-ons and equip the pieces from inventory. If you do not, Relic Exchange vendors offer diving equipment and blueprints. The bonus outfit is one route to breathing gear, not a requirement to own every preorder reward before attempting this location.
The helmet and chest piece provide the important air-capacity increase. Refining diving equipment improves that capacity further. Depth increases oxygen consumption, so plan around the gauge you see during the route rather than assuming that a listed capacity bonus guarantees the same number of minutes at every depth.
A ship helps reach the offshore position. An already available flying mount can also get you across the surface distance. An underwater mount can speed the swim, but it is an optional convenience rather than the item that unlocks the chest. Avoid delaying the search simply because a demonstration uses a mount you have not collected.
Before departing, make three checks: the correct expansion is active, your intended character has the breathing equipment worn, and you can identify the island cluster on the map. This keeps entitlement, equipment, and navigation problems from becoming one confusing failure halfway through the dive.
Find the Island Cluster Above the South Sea Label
Open the world map and locate South Sea. Look northeast of that label for a small cluster of islands. Use the island’s shape and its relationship to the label to establish your starting reference, then zoom in before marking the offshore position.

The next move is a short distance north-northwest from the reference island, into the surrounding water. The actual destination lies below the surface, so simply arriving at the island does not put you at the chest. Keep the island and your offshore target distinct when checking the map.
A broad ocean screenshot helps identify the cluster, while a closer view helps identify the dive position. Use both scales. If you can only match the South Sea label but not the nearby island shapes, refine your position before descending into an arbitrary patch of deep water.
Do not substitute an invented coordinate for those landmarks. The followable route is based on the sea label, island cluster, trench, rock wall, and cave opening. Those physical references matter more than a guessed distance measured from another player’s starting point.
Descend Into the Offshore Trench
At the dive location, look for a trench that falls below the surrounding seabed. The terrain change is the key feature: you are not searching every ruin visible near the surface. Follow the drop toward the deeper section while keeping your map position in mind.
Underwater ruins visible along the approach can help confirm that you are in an area with structures, but the chest is reached through a cave. If you find an exposed structure and no opening into the intended route, continue checking the trench rather than assuming the first ruin is the destination.
Before committing to the enclosed passage, assess your remaining breath. If the initial search used most of your air, return to the surface and begin the confirmed descent with a fresh supply. Finding the entrance once makes the second approach more direct; continuing in confusion with little air increases the chance of abandoning the route before the chamber.
The breath gauge is the useful limit here. Different equipment, refinement levels, and depths affect how much searching you can afford. A fixed countdown copied from another player’s setup would conceal those differences, so let the current gauge govern whether you continue.
Find the Concealed Cave in the Rock Wall
Near the deeper part of the trench, face south and inspect the wall. The entrance is tucked around a corner rather than standing prominently in the open seabed. Follow the wall closely enough to see the opening and compare the shape with the entrance image.

Once you find the cave, enter and follow the passage toward the larger ruin chamber. The passage is the connection between the offshore marker and the reward area. Searching directly above the chest’s map position can miss this route because rock separates the chest from the open ocean.
If you use a shark or another underwater mount, take care around narrow sections and rock projections. A mount that helps with the open-water descent can be less convenient inside the passage. Do not interpret difficulty fitting through the route as a requirement to find a different sword location.
There are oxygen-restoring bubbles along the demonstrated cave route. Use them when you find them and confirm the breath gauge is recovering before moving on. They help with the interior journey, but they are not a reason to enter the cave with no remaining margin or to ignore the approach back toward open water.
Enter the Ruin and Swim to the Upper Room
The passage opens into a larger underwater area containing a substantial ruin. Swim around to its front and locate the lower doorway. Enter through that opening rather than searching the outside walls for the weapon chest.
Inside the structure, look upward for the hole leading to a higher level. Swim through it into the upper room. The change in height is essential: the Lumen Sword is not sitting at the first doorway, and a search restricted to the lower chamber can leave you convinced that the chest is missing.

Enter the ruin and then look for the upward opening described in the route.
Search the corner of the upper room for the hidden chest. Open it and check that the reward is the Lumen Sword. The visible blade and the item’s name distinguish the result from nearby materials or ordinary treasure containers.
The complete interior sequence is therefore doorway, upward opening, upper room, corner chest. Keep that order in mind while moving through the structure. It is more reliable than circling the exterior repeatedly because the final container is on another level inside the building.
If the chest is not immediately visible, check that you passed through the upward opening fully rather than remaining beneath it. Then inspect the upper chamber’s corners. Returning to the ocean and moving the surface marker will not solve an interior search that stopped on the wrong floor.
Collect Nearby Materials After Securing the Sword
The ruin area also contains relics and other underwater materials. These can make the trip more productive, but collect them after confirming the weapon chest if the sword is your main goal. Otherwise, optional gathering can consume the air you need for the only objective that brought you here.
Natural pearls and other materials appear in the surrounding exploration route. Inspect each item’s actual identity when you collect it rather than assigning it an assumed upgrade use. A chest outside the main structure is not the same container as the upper-room sword reward.
Use the oxygen sources and your equipment to decide whether to continue exploring. If your breathing setup is limited, finishing the weapon route and leaving the rest for a later visit is a complete result. There is no requirement to clear every nearby container before the Sword becomes usable.
Keep the return route familiar while gathering: upper room back through the opening, lower entrance, then the passage to the trench. Even if another travel option is available in your current state, understanding the physical exit helps you avoid spending the rest of the dive lost inside the chamber.
Check the Weapon Before Calling It a Build Upgrade
The Lumen Sword’s distinctive appearance makes it a clear collection target, but appearance alone does not establish a universal strongest-weapon ranking. Compare its current refinement state, attack, gear slots, and effects with the weapon your character actually uses.
A freshly collected sword and a refined favorite are not equivalent comparison points. If you intend to switch, inspect the improvement path and the effects you would retain or replace. The reward solves the acquisition task; deciding whether it fits your combat setup is a separate equipment choice.
The most common wrong turns are choosing the Longsword’s challenge route, diving at the island instead of the offshore trench, overlooking the corner entrance, and searching only the lower ruin floor. Correct the stage where the route diverged. Once you reach the upper-room chest and receive the one-handed Lumen Sword, the underwater collection route is complete.
